Water Pollution Is A Problem That Effects All Living Things
Water pollution is a problem that effects all living things. Every living organism on the earth needs water to survive. When the water is polluted, it not only effects the plants and animals, it harms people. Taking care of this planet s water is very important to the short term and long term survival of living things. The oceans are constantly being polluted by individuals and many industries. These waters must be cleaned up before the costs are too great and the damages beyond repair. Action to clean up the Earth s water supply is long overdue. People in all countries must begin to take action. Plans must be made to get rid of water pollution and prevent any further destruction of the only source of water that the earth has. The actions taken will not only make the planet safer and cleaner for now, but for generations to come. For years, the world has thought the oceans are much too big to be effected by human action. The idea that the ocean is indestructible has met its end. Peter Weber, a Research Associate at the World Watch Institute says, Today, with technologies that allow us to penetrate the salt water depths, we have discovered that despite their size and imperturbable appearance, the oceans are vulnerable to the same unsustainable trends that are degrading the terrestrial environment.â⬠The oceans are one of the most important natural resources on the planet. General Pattonââ¬â¢s Principles of Life and Leadership
General Pattonââ¬â¢s Principles of Life and Leadership Born November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California, General George Smith Patton, Jr. was one of the most complicated, yet greatest leaders in military history. On June 11, 1909, he attended the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) for a year and then to the United States Military Academy at West Point where he commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the 15th cavalry Regiment. Growing up, Pattonââ¬â¢s ultimate life goal was to become a hero and a successful leader. In Robert B. Williamsonââ¬â¢s book, ââ¬Å"General Pattonââ¬â¢s Principles for Life Leadershipâ⬠, the author takes a personal account of Pattonââ¬â¢s principles which he lived and fought for. These main principles consisted of the following: Leadership,â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦My landings are poor, but my recoveries are goodâ⬠(Williamson, 115). Looking at his next principle of decisions, Patton made the decision to speak out against the war. He broke all the current rules at the time and said that the only reason why the war came about was because no one spoke out against Hitler. He made a decision to speak of his belief even if it meant things would be done against him. He was relieved from his command in 1945 because he was too rash when he said that Germany be built up as a bulwark against Russia. It is this kind of decision-making quality that will help me become a future leader in the military. In terms of success and life and death, Patton believed that success only came from being positive and not negative. In other words, as Patton pointed out, a man in the hospital lost his will to fight, and after building his own coffin, he died. Success in life and death was fighting to stay alive. Pattonââ¬â¢s beliefs have and will continue to echo through eternity. It is with these sets of beliefs that men and women who serve everywhere will grow to be the leaders they can be. Speaking out based on your own belief, leadership and pride are just a few of the principles that we continue to live by to this day. Nurse Empathy and Care of People with Dementia
Question: Discuss about the Nurse Empathy and Care of People with Dementia. Answer: Introduction: According to this paper, empathy is a key aspect of effective remedial treatment provided to vulnerable patients under critical conditions. Empathy must be provided by nurses to vulnerable patients in order to deliver optimal compassionate care. Vulnerable patients with dementia usually suffers with other chronic maladies and requires overall physiological and psychological treatment. The author has defined dementia as one of the neurological disorders arising due to damage to the brain cells and causes different symptoms such as memory loss, disorientation, hindered executive operations, depression, difficulty with articulation and cognizance, delusions and deportment disorganization. This usually occurs more in elderly people than children and young adults. Furthermore, an empathetic nurse provides adjustable and friendly environment to these patients with tenderness and amiability. Such treatment allows the patient with dementia to respond better to the remedial treatment provided . Moreover, there are certain prevailing factors that limit optimal palliative care following empathy. Stigmatization of patients with dementia by different healthcare professionals leads to a barrier between nurses and patients. Stigmatization leads to judgmental attitude towards the patient mental health and wellbeing. Besides this, increasing work pressure and stress on nurse is another prevalent barrier causing disharmony between nurses and patient. In particular, this article determines dementia as an additional load of psychological wellbeing of the patient on the nurses. Such maladies require a multidisciplinary approach with optimal implementation of assistive technology, pharmacological therapy and medication. Additionally, decrease in the dissatisfaction among nurses can be achieved by providing updated technology, effective training and decrement in the work pressure by appropriate organizational governance. Such measures will lead to increment in the empathy by nurses to wards the patient suffering with dementia. Bibliography Digby, R., GradDipAdvNur, A., R. N., Lee, S. (2016). Healthcare Professionalism in the Age of Social Media Essay Example
Healthcare Professionalism in the Age of Social Media Essay James Nibert HCA 656 Extra Credit Assignment 12-01-10 Healthcare Professionalism in the Age of Social Media Introduction Social media, like the postal letter, telephone and e-mail before it, has revolutionized the ways in which people communicate in the modern world. Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have hundreds of millions of users that have chosen this medium to communicate with the world at large. Blogs, Wikis and podcasts further contribute to the dominant communication tool of the modern world: social media. This new form of communication has been quickly adopted by professionals of all varieties, but it has specific implications for physicians and related healthcare professionals. As the ability of a physician to effectively perform their job, and for the patient to respect the physicianââ¬â¢s advice, is dependent on the trust between them, at what point does the physicianââ¬â¢s private life in terms of social media begin to affect his or her professional life? It is estimated that 59% of American adults searched for medical advice online in a 12 month period. Included in these searches were many reviews of a physicianââ¬â¢s conduct and abilities (McKay, 2010). As this new form of communication becomes increasingly more common, medical professionals will need to take precautions to insulate themselves both legally and ethically, and to retain the trust of their patients that is vital to the effective functioning of their job. Methodology The methodology of this research paper was conducted in the most systematic way possible given the time and resource limitations of the project. The search began initially with a search of Google using the phrases, ââ¬Å"professionalism and online healthcare,â⬠ââ¬Å"Health 2. 0 and professionalism,â⬠ââ¬Å"ethics and online healthcare,â⬠and ââ¬Å"healthcare professionalism and social media. â⬠The results of these searches produced several redundancies of the same useful articles. This was followed up with a search of EbscoHost and Academic Search Premiere using the phrases ââ¬Å"healthcare and social media,â⬠and ââ¬Å"professionalism, healthcare and social media. â⬠This resulted in the discovery of three additional articles. Finally, the search was aided by Dr. Alberto Coustasse who directed the search to several previously undiscovered articles. Discussion Maintaining a strict sense of professionalism is vital to many careers, but is essential to the duties of a physician. Doctors that have lost the respect or trust of those they treat can no longer perform their jobs to the best of their abilities. It has been previously demonstrated that social media has the ability to create a rapid reaction to a perceived problem. In 2008 the group Doctors for Obama mobilized thousands of physicians on Facebook to make their opinions and concerns about the new healthcare policy known, with the effect of having a demonstrable influence on the final legislation and an ongoing voice in President Obamaââ¬â¢s healthcare agenda (Jain, 2009). A similar effect, though on a smaller scale, could be anticipated from a physicianââ¬â¢s faux paus distributed widely through social media. A study conducted in 2008, focusing on the social networking site Facebook (by far the most popular social networking site in the U. S), showed that of medical students and residents of a selected sample group 44. 5% had a Facebook account and two-thirds of them kept their account public with ââ¬Å" â⬠¦ a significant portion having subjectively inappropriate contentâ⬠(Thompson, et al. 008). Some examples drawn from a 2008 study including public Facebook groups created by medical students with titles such as ââ¬Å"PIMPâ⬠(Party of Important Male Physicians), ââ¬Å"Keep your fu***ing hand down and shut the f**k up during lectureâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Physicians looking for trophy wives in trainingâ⬠(Thompson et al, 2008) The public profiles selected by this study disclosed physicians home postal address (6. 1% of the time), f ield of study (79. 6%), email address (83. %) and sexual orientation (52. 4%). While the impact of such information was not followed up on, at least to this date, by the study, it is easy to ascertain how such sensitive and personal information could lead to trouble for a physician whose public social networking profile angered a patient. In addition to the possible personal consequences at risk to a physician, unprofessional conduct on social networking sites could also have unintended professional and legal consequences as well. As stated, ââ¬Å"Already the first lawsuits have been filed against physicians whom patients accused of violating the privacy of medical information acts, notes attorney Robert Coffield, a West Virginia- based specialist in health care compliance and regulatory lawâ⬠(Hawn, 2009). A doctor who, for example, blogged about their trials in dealing with a difficult patientââ¬âin a way that would make such a client identifiableââ¬âand forgot that either the patient or a family member or friend had been added to their social network would be inviting litigation with possible monetary and professional penalties. In addition, physicians, even with the best of intentions, offering medical advice over social media platforms without a professional agreement are subject to litigation from numerous people. The importance of professionalism and the threat posed to it by the burgeoning social media outlets has been noticed and considered by professional organizations including the American Medical Association. In 2010 the AMA released an official policy on professionalism in the use of social media. It warns that, ââ¬Å"Physicians should weigh a number of considerations when maintaining a presence onlineâ⬠(AMA, 2010). It is stated in line f of the policy that, ââ¬Å"Physicians must recognize the actions online and content posted may negatively affect their reputations among patients and colleagues, may have consequences for their medical careers (particularly for physicians in training and medical students), and can undermine public trust in the medical professionâ⬠(AMA, 2010). To this end the AMA outlines a policy that encourages the use of privacy settings to safeguard personal information on social networking sites, be vigilant of observing and maintaining all patient privacy legislation and safeguard at all times the boundaries of the patient/client relationship while online. It further states that it is a physicianââ¬â¢s responsibility to make colleagues aware of any objectionable material on their own profiles and to report illegal or unethical behavior to the proper authorities. Conclusion It must be noted that while physicians must certainly be entitled to the same freedoms and liberties that the rest of us enjoy, it is in both their personal and professional interest to maintain boundaries between these two segments in their lives. As an alternative there are social networking sites dedicated to only medical professionals such as Medscape. Like elected officials, law enforcement and school teachers; it is essential to the effective functioning of their duties for physicians to achieve and maintain both the professional distance and trust of those in their charge. Following the previously discussed AMA guidelines is an initial step towards achieving that goal and avoiding many unforeseen and unintended consequences. References McKay, L. (2010). Analysis of The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien Essay
Analysis of The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien - Essay Example The story exhibited the manner by which a soldier copes up with guilt. The author explored the concept of blame that soldiers in the battle field experience specifically when another soldier whom they are supporting and sharing their everyday experience would be wounded or killed. The chapter is about the day after the first death in a particular group of soldiers in Vietnam. The death of Kiowa came as a shock that taught the group about different lessons in life, specifically in such a dangerous situation. In the chapter ââ¬Å"In the Fieldâ⬠Oââ¬â¢Brien wrote: When a man died, there had to be blame. Jimmy Cross understood this. You could blame the war. You could blame the idiots who made the war. You could blame Kiowa for going to it. You could blame the rain. You could blame the river. You could blame the field, the mud, the climate. You could blame the enemy. You could blame the mortar rounds. You could blame people who were too lazy to read a newspaper, who were bored by the daily body counts, who switched channels at the mention of politics. You could blame the munitions makers or Karl Marx or a trick of fate or an old man in Omaha who forgot to vote (169-170). In the end of the chapter, one of the characters, Jim Cross, the leader of the group, contemplated on the concept of blame and the manner by which soldiers in war should overcome the guilt (Oââ¬â¢Brien 170). It can be perceived that Jim Crossââ¬â¢ view is that blame can be considered as an unproductive feeling and concept since it cannot change or resolve anything. No matter who or what becomes the target of the blame it cannot change the fact that a negative event had already occurred. In the story blame had been carried by all the soldiers in the group regarding the death of one of them, Kiowa. Everyone has their own view regarding how the death should have been prevented if each one of them had acted differently. This is good in terms of the fact that everyone in the group had prov en their sense of responsibility, attachment and dedication to their brothers in the battlefield. There are two characters who specifically exhibited the greatest guilt. One is the soldier who had been the last person who had talked to Kiowa. He blames himself for turning on the light to show the picture of his girlfriend to Kiowa, which revealed the position of the group and triggered the bombing (169). Another is Cross himself who was thinking that his lack of dedication and heart in joining the forces has caused the life of Kiowa because of the fact that he had made a wrong decision of making the group camp out in low land without any form of cover. In addition, he ignored the warnings of people around him (161). The thought of putting the blame to every possible reasons came from Cross. He understood how guilt can affect the performance of soldiers in battle, thus, regardless of how much he wanted to blame himself, he thought of every possible factor he can think of to blame. It is futile and unproductive to put blame on any factor but it is the way of the emotional faculties of the body to cope with the lost of a comrade. Included in the factors that Cross blamed are the war and the people who made war, which can be considered as two of the most pointless factors he had thought about. War cannot be resolved nor eliminated because it can be considered as part of human nature. This is related to the second factor which is the people who ma

The Long Arm Statute Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Long Arm Statute - Essay Example Jurisdiction over a defendant who is out-of-state is often known as extraterritorial personal jurisdiction or personam jurisdiction which permits a court to exert jurisdiction upon an individual. It is always an important requirement for a given court to listen to the merits of claims alleged. Going by the history, a given state had the capability of exercising its jurisdiction within its territorial limits. For that reason, a defendant who is nonresident was brought to court when the delivery of writ or summons (service of process) was settled while the defendant in question was within the state boundaries (Parness 486). In Adamsonââ¬â¢s case, he lives in Idaho with his children who happened to have made an order of Makers Mark from Kentucky. Can Adamson serve the company with a ââ¬Å"long arm service of processâ⬠and bring the case back to Idaho for court action? Adamson can serve the company with the long arm service of process so that the case can be taken back to Idaho. However, Kentucky would be ideal for handling the cases despite the fact that Adamsonââ¬â¢s family hailed from Idaho, and had minimal contact with the forum state. In this case, Makers Mark was searched through the Internet and for that reason; there was ââ¬Ëcertain minimum contactsââ¬â¢ during the process.... However, Idaho is ideal for the hearing of the case as the defendants hail from the state and would be better placed to access the courts as opposed to going all the way to Kentucky. The best state for forum and review of the case would be Kentucky though with minimum contact, is the place to follow up the case as the transaction was done within the state. The fact that there was certain minimum contact was enough a reason to adopt the in Kentucky (Adams). Which state law from the two states should the Judge use? The judge will use the Kentucky state law which states that: A court may exert personal jurisdiction upon a person acting directly or through an agent as to claims emanating from the personââ¬â¢s conducting any business in this Commonwealth. The ââ¬Å"personâ⬠in this case refers to an individual, administrator, his executor, any personal representative, partnership, association, corporation, or any other commercial or legal entity, who happens to be a non resident of the state (Parness 487). In this case Adamson is not the person that committed the act, but his children who acted as his representatives. They made the transaction on his behalf and are liable for legal action within Kentucky state statutes and laws. Explain the written law and your reasons. Analyze the written law in relation to this case, explain current case law and reach a conclusion as a judge Because the person (Adamsonââ¬â¢s representatives) made an Internet search, this means that there was, in deed, certain minimum contact with the state. Secondly, the person also made calls and enquires and would later manage to convince the company through calls and fax that they were of the right age to make the transaction. The defendant has breached the Kentucky statute by
